No. 1 Sea Kings Beat Los Alamitos in Boys’ Tennis

Top-ranked Corona del Mar won eight of nine sets in doubles and defeated No. 3 Los Alamitos, 10-8, in a nonleague boys’ tennis match Wednesday at Corona del Mar.

Brian Morton and Randy Myers swept, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, and Cameron Ball and Peter Kulmaticki won, 6-3, 6-4, 6-2, for the Sea Kings (6-0).

Cody Jackson swept in singles, 7-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Drew Hoskins swept, 7-6, 6-4, 6-3, for the Griffins (7-1).

In other nonleague boys’ tennis:

No. 10 Servite 12, Marina 6--Oscar Zambrano and Rafael Sweet, in No. 1 doubles, were the only Servite players who swept their sets. They won 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.

No. 7 Capistrano Valley 16, Laguna Beach 2--Michael Nguyen, the No. 3 singles player for Capistrano Valley (6-1), won 6-1, 6-0, 6-0, improving to 18-3 this season.

In Golden West League boys’ tennis:

Saddleback 13, Westminster 5--Rafael Nieto swept, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, for Saddleback (3-2, 1-1).

In nonleague golf:

Brea Olinda 379, Servite 385--Alex Oh shot three-under-par 67 at Los Coyotes and Western Hills to lead Brea Olinda (4-2). Nico Bollini shot 73 for Servite (4-2).

In Century League boys’ swimming:

No. 3 Villa Park 133, Santa Ana Valley 38--Sophomore Charlie Fisher finished first in the 100 butterfly (58.28 seconds) and 100 backstroke (59.15), and junior Chris Koontz won the 50 freestyle (23.79) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.89) for Villa Park (4-0, 1-0).

In the Empire League:

Cypress 119, Kennedy 47--Kirk Sandvig won the 200 freestyle and the 100 backstroke, and swam on the winning 200-medley and 200-freestyle relays for host Cypress (4-0, 1-0).

El Dorado 92, Katella 78--Matt Van Eck of El Dorado won two events, the 50 (22.01) and 100 freestyles (49.05), in Southern Section qualifying times.

In the Freeway League:

Troy 129, La Habra 50--Brandon Secrest finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:51.70) and 500 freestyle (5:07.65) and Kyle Taylor won the 200 individual medley (2:16.39) and 100 backstroke (1:00.88) for Troy (4-0, 1-0).

In Century League girls’ swimming:

No. 10 Canyon 120, Orange 50--Erin Volcan of Canyon broke Laurie Osuna’s two-year-old school record in the 200 freestyle (1:55.3).

El Modena 90, Foothill 80--El Modena’s 200 freestyle relay was the key as the Vanguards edged Foothill’s relay team by .04 to win in 1:47.01 and secure its first victory over Foothill. Missy Garrison (50 freestyle, 100 breaststroke) and Leslie Lorenz (100 freestyle, 200 freestyle) each won two events and swam on two winning relay teams for El Modena (4-0, 1-0).

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 2 Laguna Hills 90, No. 4 University 80--Laguna Hills won the last two events, the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, to edge University.

Costa Mesa 139, Estancia 51--Twins Wendy and Jody Martinovich each won two events to lead Costa Mesa.

In Garden Grove League boys’ volleyball:

Rancho Alamitos 3, Santiago 0--Jason Gilber had nine kills for Rancho Alamitos (6-2, 1-1), which won, 15-4, 15-6, 15-12.

In the Golden West League::

No. 7 Servite 3, Tustin 1--Kevin Kowalski had 34 kills for host Tustin (1-4, 0-1) in Servite’s 15-9, 7-15, 15-10, 15-12 victory. Will Diep had 17 kills for the Friars (6-0, 1-0).
