No. 2 Newport Harbor Beats No. 6 Santa Margarita in 3 Games

Billy Clayton had 16 kills and Ty Tramblie had 61 assists and 18 digs to help host Newport Harbor, ranked second in the county, defeat sixth-ranked Santa Margarita, 15-11, 15-7, 16-14, in a Sea View League boys’ volleyball match Friday.

Matt Jameson had 15 kills and Al Limon had 14 for the Sailors (15-1, 7-1 in league), who rallied from a 14-12 deficit in the last game to defeat Santa Margarita (11-9, 2-6) for the third time this season.

In Sea View League softball:

No. 6 Woodbridge 4, Irvine 2--Jessica Thompson hit a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to bring Irvine within 4-2, but the Vaqueros left the tying run on base. Pitcher Tracey Alcaraz improved to 14-7 for Woodbridge (17-9, 5-0).

No. 7 El Toro 2, Santa Margarita 0--Susan Churchwell pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts for host El Toro (18-6, 3-2).

In Sea View League boys’ tennis:

Newport Harbor 11, El Toro 7--Warren Schaeffer and Will McRorie swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, for Newport Harbor (3-14, 1-8), which won its first league match in five seasons.

In the South Coast League:

No. 4 Dana Hills 15, No. 7 Capistrano Valley 3--Brian Liebman and Jason Efstathiou swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-4, for host Dana Hills (14-3, 8-0). Capistrano Valley is 14-3, 6-2.

In Orange League girls’ track:

Savanna 75, Valencia 47--Quiana Starr and her sister, Reanita, each broke their own school records for host Savanna (6-2, 4-1). Quiana’s mark of 18 feet 1 1/2 inches in the long jump broke her record by 3 1/2 inches. Reanita’s mark of 37-1 in the triple jump bettered her record by 2 1/2 inches.
