Vargas to Fight Marquez With Title on Line

Fernando Vargas of Oxnard will defend his International Boxing Federation junior-middleweight title against former champion Raul Marquez on July 17 at Caesars Lake Tahoe.

Vargas, 16-0 with 16 knockouts, won the title by stopping Yory Boy Campas in five rounds in December.

Marquez, 29-1 with 20 knockouts, held the IBF junior-middleweight title from April until December of 1997, losing to Campas in eight rounds after two successful title defenses.

The fight will be the second title defense for Vargas, 21, a member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team.

VOLLEYBALL

* Quartz Hill High is forfeiting two boys’ victories--and the Golden League championship--for using an ineligible player.

The Rebels, ranked No. 3 in the region by The Times, are forfeiting league victories over Palmdale and Antelope Valley because junior Ryan Stevens, a reserve outside hitter, played in those matches despite being academically ineligible.

Quartz Hill, which would have tied Highland for the league title, falls to 13-3 overall and second place in the league at 7-3.

“It’s a bad situation for the kids,” Quartz Hill Coach Jason Peplinski said. “They’ve worked hard all season and they have every right to be mad.”

TRACK AND FIELD

* Annmarie Turpin of Simi Valley High, the co-state leader in the girls’ high jump at 5-10, has committed to UC Irvine.

Turpin has posted bests of 58.12 in the 400 meters, 45.59 in the 300 low hurdles and 17-5 in the long jump this season.

FOOTBALL

* Lance Fauria, a former Crespi player who was offensive coordinator at Chaminade last season, has been hired as coach at Santa Maria St. Joseph.

Fauria, 34, played tight end at Washington. His brother, Christian, is a tight end with the Seattle Seahawks.

AUTO RACING

* Cory Kruseman of Ventura won his second Sprint Car Racing Assn. main event on Saturday at Perris Auto Speedway.

Kruseman ranks third in points with 495, behind defending champion Richard Griffin of Silver City, N.M., (589) and Troy Cline of Hawthorne (512).

GOLF

* Cal State Northridge has signed Mike Mendoza of Bishop Amat.

Mendoza is a four-year captain of the Lancers, the Del Rey League champions.

He was an All-Southern Section selection last season.

HONORS

* Tashie Aguinaga of Antelope Valley College, a sophomore shortstop who batted .426 and led the Marauders with 15 doubles and 39 runs batted in, was selected most valuable player in the Foothill Conference.

Antelope Valley (33-14-1) finished tied for second with Chaffey.

* The Northridge women’s basketball team, which won the Big Sky Conference championship and qualified for the NCAA tournament, was recognized this week by Mayor Richard Riordan, who presented the players with a certificate.

“It was a welcome surprise,” said Coach Frozena Jerro, who led the team to a 21-8 record, 13-3 in Big Sky play. “The opportunity to meet the mayor was very exciting for me and our players.”
