Brea Olinda’s Oh Brothers Are Suspended From School

Alex Oh, The Times Orange County golfer of the year in 1998, and his twin brother, Brad, have been suspended from Brea Olinda High because of disciplinary reasons, golf Coach Ken Lutz said Thursday.

Details of the infraction, which occurred at school last week, were not released. The seniors will have separate disciplinary hearings, which could result in expulsion, according to Lutz.

Brad has enrolled in continuation school and Alex is completing his studies at home, Lutz said. The results of their hearings will determine if they can earn diplomas from Brea.

The hearing for Alex will not take place until after the golf season. Brad might be reinstated in time for the Southern Section finals May 13, but Lutz said: “There’s about a 1% chance of that.”

With the playoffs beginning Monday, the timing of the setback couldn’t be worse for the Wildcats, No. 2 in the rankings. Brea recently defeated then-No. 1 University and shot two-over-par as a team at Los Serranos, site of a Southern Section regional.

“It’s really sad,” Lutz said. “The way we were playing, there’s not a team around that could touch us.”

Alex finished second last year in the CIF-SCGA individual championships and Brad finished 10th. Lutz had high hopes the Ohs would help carry the team to the CIF-SCGA team championship this year, but now those hopes are greatly diminished.

“We’ve gone from a great team to a pretty good team,” Lutz said. “We can still do it, but we need some guys to pick it up.”

Alex and Brad could not be reached for comment.
