Westlake Muscles to Easy Victory

Garrett Michaels hit two home runs and Kevin Howard hit one Friday to propel Westlake High to a 9-1 victory over host Simi Valley that clinched third place in the Marmonte League.

The homers give Westlake (18-5-1, 8-4 in league play) 50 this season. The state record before the season was 51, shared by three schools. However, Chula Vista Eastlake has hit 56 homers this season.

Howard had three hits and the homer was his 12th, two fewer than Mike Lieberthal’s school record set in 1990.

Jesse Kozlowski, a junior right-hander, struck out eight in four innings for Westlake.

In other baseball games:

Royal 11, Agoura 1--Bryan Lipman of Royal hit his 10th home run to tie the school single-season record and the Highlanders (18-5-1, 9-3) finished second in the Marmonte League with the victory at Agoura (9-14-1, 2-10).

Lipman, a junior, tied the record set last season by Bobby Egan.

Royal left-hander Scott Rice threw a five-hitter.

Moorpark 5, Newbury Park 1--Wes Rasmussen had three hits, including two home runs, and three runs batted in for visiting Moorpark in a Marmonte League game.

Rasmussen hit a two-run home run during the four-run fifth for Moorpark (13-12, 5-7).

Canyon 17, Burbank 7--Mike Kennedy had two doubles and three RBIs, including a two-run double, for Canyon (13-11, 11-4), which finished second in the Foothill League.

Hart 18, Valencia 10--Jamie Shields had two home runs and three RBIs for visiting Hart during a Foothill League game. Shields (7-0) also had five strikeouts and no walks in three innings of relief for Hart (21-4, 13-1), ranked No. 3 in the region by The Times.

Tony Rodriguez had two home runs and five RBIs for Valencia (13-10-1, 5-8-1).

Burroughs 8, Saugus 5--Nick Jastrow hit a two-run single in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and put visiting Burroughs ahead for good in a Foothill League game.

Burroughs (13-13, 8-7) finished third in the league, and will return to the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year.

Palmdale 15, Highland 9--Chris Testa and Mark Hendricks each had three hits in a Golden League victory for the Falcons (18-7, 12-3) at Highland (20-5, 14-1).

Palmdale ace Matt Harrington (8-2) had to leave the game in the fourth with an elbow injury. Highland’s Brandon Golphenee had a three-run home run.

Quartz Hill 11, Littlerock 1--Travis Allen slugged a three-run home run, Ryan Ingram had two hits and drove in two runs, and Eric Connelly had two hits and scored two runs for the Rebels (10-14, 9-6) in a Golden League game at Littlerock.

Santa Clara 3, Calabasas 2--Zach Sloan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and none out in the eighth and the host Coyotes (12-12, 9-3) won a Frontier League game.

Tony Sulser (8-2) struck out five in two innings of relief, and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam.

Randy Curtis had four hits for Calabasas.

Santa Paula 12, Nordhoff 8--Sam Guzman, Tony Pineda and Aaron Segovia each had three hits in a Frontier League victory for host Santa Paula (3-16-1, 2-10).

John Hill hit a grand slam for Nordhoff.

Fillmore 10, St. Bonaventure 0--Jesse Avila (4-3) scattered eight hits and pitched his first shutout this season, and he also had three hits and drove in two runs for the Flashes in a Tri-Valley League game at Fillmore.

Matt Nichols had two hits and two runs batted in for the Flashes (13-6-1, 6-6).

Lancaster Desert Christian 19, Lone Pine 1--Ryan McMichael had two home runs, a double and a single and Tyler Downie had a grand slam and six RBIs for the Knights (21-1, 11-1), who clinched the first league title in the school’s 10-year history.

SOFTBALL

Moorpark 1, Notre Dame 0--Jennilee Martin tripled and scored on Jenni Perez’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the host Musketeers a victory in the fifth-place game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Tara Barker (8-6) pitched two perfect innings of relief for Moorpark (15-13).

Calabasas 3, Santa Clara 0--Amy Rosson pitched a no-hitter and had 16 strikeouts in a Frontier League game. Rosson (15-6) has 209 strikeouts and 12 shutouts this season for Calabasas (15-8-1, 11-1), which defended its Frontier League title.

Nordhoff 1, Santa Paula 0--Melody Shedlosky drove in the only run with a single in the sixth inning of a Frontier League game.

Beth Cain (9-13) pitched a two-hitter for Nordhoff, getting six strikeouts and walking none.

This was the first win for Nordhoff (9-13, 3-9) over Santa Paula (12-9, 8-4) in 14 years.

Oakwood 18, Buckley 4--Emily Bubbers had three hits with a double and a home run for the visiting Gorillas (11-6, 6-4) in a Heritage League victory.
