The Women’s Guild of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center’s fourth annual Los Angeles Antiques Show, held April 30 to May 2 at Santa Monica Air Center’s Barker Hangar, raised $500,000 for the establishment of the Cedars-Sinai Center for Women’s Health. The opening-night benefit gala, held April 29, attracted 1,700 people, including Faye Dunaway, Carmen Electra, Lauren Bacall, California First Lady Sharon Davis, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jamie Gertz, Dr. Ruth Westheimer and Paige Rense, editor in chief of Architectural Digest. Honorary chairs were Barbara and Garry Marshall; honorary design co-chairs were Town & Country Editor in Chief Pamela Fiore and designer and author Carolyne Roehm. Guests enjoyed music, dinner, drinks and a preview of the antiques show. The new women’s center will be used for research, treatment and clinical care of diseases affecting women.

Public Counsel Law Center raised $1.75 million at its 29th annual William O. Douglas Dinner, held April 22 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Century City. Sargent Shriver received the William O. Douglas award, presented by Motion Picture Assn. of America chief Jack Valenti. Among the 1,300 people attending the dinner were Shriver’s wife, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, son Bobby Shriver, and daughter Maria Shriver and her husband, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mayor Richard Riordan and Nancy Daly Riordan. Times Mirror Foundation Executive Vice President Thomas Unterman announced a $150,000 grant to support the pro bono law office’s work with children. Unterman was honored with the Public Counsel’s Founders Award, presented by California First Lady Sharon Davis. The center provides free legal services to Los Angeles’ poor and to community service organizations.

Nancy Daly Riordan was honored for her work for children’s rights at the Helping Hand of Los Angeles’ Mother’s Day Luncheon on April 30 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Beverly Hills. About 650 attended the luncheon and fashion show courtesy of Nordstrom. Helping Hand of Los Angeles, a support group of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, presented a check for $300,000 to the hospital and announced the endowment of the Helping Hand of Los Angeles Chair in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The group also supports the Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Detection Program and endowed the first chair at Cedars-Sinai, the Helping Hand Miriam Jacobs Chair in Maternal-Fetal Medicine. Daly Riordan, wife of L.A.’s mayor, was named Mother of the Year at the luncheon.
