Marquand Woozy, but She Wins 3,200 Final

University senior Allyson Marquand made it to the Southern Section track and field finals in plenty of time to win the Division III 3,200 meters. Whether she remembers it is another question.

Marquand suffered a slight concussion in a State Cup soccer game earlier in the day. Marquand was playing with her under-18 club team, the Mission Viejo Mirage, when she bumped heads with another player while going up for a header during a 2-1 loss.

Marquand was visibly bruised behind her left ear and was experiencing headaches after running the third-fastest time of the day.

Santa Ana senior Alfonso Leon was also still smarting from a spill he took a week earlier at the Division II preliminaries. Leon said he got his feet tangled while running behind leader Josh Spiker of Ventura in the 1,600 and tumbled onto the infield.

Leon got up and finished the race, but his time didn’t qualify him for the division final. A Southern Section ruling committee allowed Leon into the final and he took advantage, running the third-fastest time of the day and advancing to Friday’s Masters Meet at Cerritos College.

Tom McCluskey has resigned as boys’ basketball coach at Tustin, barely a month after returning to the job.

McCluskey led Tustin to the 1991 Division II state title and had a record of 109-40 in five seasons. He left the Tillers in 1992 to become an assistant at Saddleback College and later spent four seasons as men’s coach at Golden West College. He came back to the Tillers last month to replace his protege, Andy Ground, who spent seven seasons at Tustin before resigning in February to become an assistant at Saddleback College.

“He said he had a family situation come up and he decided to put the commitment with his family ahead of his commitment with the basketball team,” Tiller Athletic Director Al Rosmino said. “I’m in shock.”

When Brian Sinay of University High won the Southern Section boys’ individual golf title with a record-setting 65 Thursday at Canyon Country Club in Palm Springs, he overshadowed a remarkable overall performance by the field.

Sinay, who broke the Southern Section record of 66 set by Tiger Woods in 1994, was one of six players in the field of 72 who shot less than 70. Teammate Ron Won shot 66. Ten players broke par.

One of them, Nico Bollini of Servite, shot one-under 71 and tied for sixth. But Bollini, one of the top junior golfers in the nation, summed up where he thought that score fit in as he turned in his scorecard and saw the low numbers already posted.

“Jeez, I feel like a hack,” he said.

Orange County showed its volleyball strength last week, claiming three of the four Southern Section Division I semifinalists with three others--Servite (Division II), Laguna Beach (III) and Calvary Chapel (III) advancing to Wednesday’s semifinals.

“[The Sunset League] had three of the eight quarterfinalists,” Esperanza Coach Kurt Kersten said. “The Sea View League probably would have had three too if El Toro didn’t play Corona del Mar in the second round.”

Esperanza advanced to the semifinals with a five-game victory over second-seeded Loyola and will face Sea View League co-champion Newport Harbor, the third-seeded team. Fourth-seeded Corona del Mar, also from the Sea View, will play top-seeded Simi Valley Royal in the other semifinal.
