“Diego Rivera: Art and Revolution,” a major retrospective devoted to Mexico’s most famous artist, opens at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. * “Diego Rivera: Art and Revolution,” Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire Blvd., L.A. Ends Aug. 16. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, noon-8 p.m.; Friday, noon-9 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m. Adults, $7; seniors and students, $5; children and younger students, $1; children under 5 free. (323) 857-6000.

11 am: Family

The nation’s largest no-kill animal shelter, Utah-based Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, holds a Memorial Day Family Picnic Festival at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center, featuring children’s play tables, face-painting, game booths and vegetarian barbecue. Animals are the stars for the day, though, from the leaping canines of West Valley Dog Sports, who’ll give Fly Ball and dog agility demonstrations, to adoptable dogs and cats. Proceeds benefit Best Friends’ No More Homeless Pets campaign. (A pricier benefit for the group happens Monday: the “$35,000 Pedigree Brand Memorial Day Grandprix” equestrian event.)

Two premieres are scheduled: “Blank Slate,” about relationships, and an excerpt from the quasi-ancestral “Beyond the Ancient Mist.” Both feature music by Horton Award-winning composer Steve Moshier, played by his Liquid Skin music ensemble. A founding member of the Seoul Contemporary Dance Company, Lee currently teaches in the Department of Theatre Arts and Dance at Cal State L.A.
