Foothill Runs Into Perfection

Valley View’s Keira Goerl pitched a perfect game and knocked second-seeded Foothill from the Southern Section Division I playoffs Thursday.

Goerl, a junior on the American Junior National team, struck out 13, including the game’s last five batters in a 2-0 quarterfinal victory. It was Goerl’s eighth no-hitter.

“It was the first perfect game against us in the 10 years I’ve been at the school,” Foothill Coach Joe Gonzalez said. “She was awesome.”

Valley View (27-2) scored twice in the first inning against Foothill’s Courtney Fossatti (15-2), who made her first appearance since severely spraining her ankle in a game on April 29.

Fossatti was lifted after a single, sacrifice bunt and hit batter.

Elizabeth Bendig got a second out on a fielder’s choice but walked Katie Junge to load the bases. Bendig hit Elena Cranmer, forcing in one run, and Sara Kline singled to score another.

Bendig faced only 16 batters over the next five innings, striking out one. Valley View got four hits in spoiling Foothill’s quest to win its first section title since 1992 and return to the finals for the first time since 1997.

In other Division I games:

Mater Dei 1, Camarillo 0--For the third time in four years, Marissa Young has played an instrumental role in eliminating Camarillo (20-8) from the playoffs. This time, Young singled to open the game, took second on Christina Clark’s sacrifice, took third on Courtney Betley’s groundout, and scored on Ruby Rojas’ line drive single. Young (16-2), who pitched a two-hitter against Camarillo as a freshman in the 1996 championship game, pitched a three-hitter and struck out 10. She struck out three with a runner at third in the third inning in outdueling Kathryn Nevard (16-7), who also allowed only three hits.

Fountain Valley 1, Moreno Valley Canyon Springs 0 (13)--Natalie King (12-4) scored the winning run, pitched a no-hitter and struck out 24 to break Rae Rice’s 1991 single-game school record of 22.

In Division IV:

Rosary 2, North Hollywood Harvard Westlake 0--Dana Kenney had two hits and scored, and Mallory Anderson (12-3) pitched a four-hitter. Rosary (23-8) will play top-seeded West Hills Chaminade, a 1-0 winner over La Canada.

In Division V:

Calvary Chapel 3, Thousand Oaks La Reina 2--Sarah Hughes hit a two-run double with two outs in the first inning to give the Eagles (14-6) a 3-0 lead. Hughes (7-3) pitched a three-hitter for the visiting Eagles (14-6), who play Los Angeles Baptist, a 5-0 winner over San Pedro Mary Star.

Orange Lutheran 3, Cerritos Whitney 0--Jessica Edwards (14-4) pitched a four-hitter, struck out seven and didn’t walk anyone for the visiting Lancers (26-5). Orange Lutheran will play Pomona Catholic, a 4-2 winner over Diamond Ranch.

In Division VI:

Camarillo Cornerstone Christian 2, Liberty Christian 1--Adrian Burke scored on Shannon Brown’s single with two out in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the defending champion Eagles.

Capistrano Valley Christian 2, Temecula Linfield 0--Lauren Capriotti (17-6) struck out 11 and walked none in a three-hitter for visiting CVC (18-6).
