J.R. Redmond isn’t talking about the details of his marriage to a part-time employee of the Arizona State athletic department, but the Sun Devil tailback said he “learned some valuable lessons.”

“One, nothing is for free. Two, you can’t trust women,” Redmond said, speaking to reporters for the first time since the bizarre tale surfaced Friday.

The NCAA suspended him from last Saturday’s game at Oregon and ordered him to repay $418 in cellular phone bills and $173 for a Las Vegas trip he took with his new wife.

The penalties stemmed from the NCAA’s finding that the help Redmond received from Francine Arthur amounted to benefits from an improper source.

The couple married in Mesa, Ariz., on Aug. 25. He filed for divorce on Oct. 22. Redmond told investigators he believed Arthur, 31, was trying to gain access to some of his future earnings, which could be considerable because he is a top NFL prospect.

Under a recent Arizona law, a spouse obtaining a divorce is entitled to half of the partner’s assets only up until the time the petition is served.

That would make it virtually impossible for Arthur to get any of Redmond’s future earnings. The divorce likely won’t be final for several months.
