* Matt Thayer, a two-time All-Southern Section outfielder from Harvard-Westlake, has committed to UCLA.

Thayer’s father, Rob, played on the first team coached by Gary Adams at UCLA.

* The Falcon Baseball Camp run by Coach Phil Torres of Crescenta Valley High will be held Dec. 27-28 for players ages 10-14 at Stengel Field.

SOCCER

* Cal Lutheran will host Chapman in an NCAA West regional first-round women’s game at 11 a.m. today at North field.

Cal Lutheran (14-6), unranked nationally, is making its seventh appearance in the NCAA Championships but hosting a regional game for the first time.

Chapman (13-4) earned its first Division III berth.

The winner today advances to the West regional semifinals against fifth-ranked UC San Diego (15-1-1) in San Diego at 5 p.m. Saturday.

UC San Diego, which will compete at the NCAA Division II level beginning next season, won Division III national titles in 1995, ’96 and ’97.

Freshman forward Alix Rucinski has 18 goals and four assists, junior forward Alia Khan has seven goals and five assists, and junior midfielder Betsy Fisch has eight goals for the Regals, who have a four-match winning streak.

Chapman has won seven consecutive matches.

* Erin Broadwell of Cal State Northridge has been selected to the All-Big Sky Conference team.

Paige Andrews of Northridge and Ashley May of Idaho State shares the Big Sky newcomer of the year award.

Andrews, Jessica Crespo and Riya Gough of Northridge were second-team selections.

TENNIS

* Top-seeded Sonya Reynolds of Palmdale defeated Julie Gates of Encinitas, 6-4, 6-2, to win the girls’ 16 title in the 55th annual Rose Bowl Junior Tennis Championships Sunday at Pasadena High.

Georgette Wright of Burbank defeated Melissa Nguyen of Campbell Hall, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, in the girls’ 18 final.

Erica Sauer of Somis and Riza Zalameda of Los Angeles won the girls’ 16 doubles title, 6-2, 6-2, over Gia Nafarrete of Seal Beach and Monica Wiesener of Woodland Hills.

Patrick Buchanan of Fullerton beat Andrew Lieu of Thousand Oaks, 7-5, 6-2, in the boys’ 18 final and Todd Elliot of Ojai defeated Hardy Ehlers of San Diego, 6-3, 6-4, in the boys’ 14 final.

In boys’ 14 doubles, Justin Montgomery of Oxnard and Eric McKean of Pacific Palisades defeated Vahe Assadourian of Glendale and Mark Contreras of Temple City, 6-2, 6-4.

BOXING

* Undefeated Hector Camacho Jr. of Puerto Rico and Rudy Martinez of Oxnard will headline a seven-bout card Saturday night at Seaside Park in Ventura.

The fight will be televised live on Telemundo.

Camacho, 25-0 with 14 knockouts, is the World Boxing Assn. of North America super-lightweight champion. He will fight former Juan Camello Rodriguez of Mexico in a 10-round main event.

Rodriguez, former Mexican National lightweight champion, is 36-12-2 with 23 knockouts.

Martinez, 10-0 with six knockouts, will fight Felipe Campa of Oxnard in a 10-round bout for the vacant World Boxing Council super-bantamweight junior title.

Undercard bouts include former WBC super-welterweight champion Lupe Aquino of Santa Paula, and Oxnard’s Carlos Madrigal and Mario Aguiniga.

CROSS-COUNTRY

* Steve Blum, girls’ coach at Buena High for the last 17 years, will step down at the end of the season.

Blum, 44, said he wants to spend more time with his family, devote more time to his running career at the masters level and to his job as union president of the Ventura Unified Education Assn.

“Trying to be a track coach and a cross-country coach and doing all those other things at the same time is real tough,” said Blum, who guided Buena to 13 consecutive Channel League titles from 1983-95 and to the Ventura County championship in 1983.
