Buena Park Slips Past La Habra to Win Title

Buena Park defeated La Habra, 9-8, to win the Freeway League boys’ water polo championship Wednesday at Independence Park in Fullerton.

Steve Lopez scored four goals and Kyle Harriman added three for Buena Park (18-9, 5-0 in league), which won its first league title since 1996.

La Habra (13-11, 4-1) was seeking its third consecutive championship.

In other Freeway League games:

Sonora 20, Sunny Hills 4--Jeff Padgett scored seven goals for Sonora (18-5, 3-2). Host Sunny Hills drops to 0-5 in league.

Troy 15, Fullerton 10--Ian Markstrum scored eight goals for host Troy (17-6, 2-3) and set a school record for goals in a single season with 131, breaking the old record of 129.

In the Century League:

No. 2 Foothill 20, El Modena 3--Goalkeeper Adam Katz made 13 saves and teammate Pat Logan scored six goals for host Foothill, which led, 10-0, after one quarter. Foothill (16-8, 4-0) will play at Villa Park (19-6, 4-0) for the league title Friday.

No. 6 Villa Park 11, Santa Ana Valley 8--T.J. Matijevich led host Villa Park with four goals. Goalie Jared Jones had a career-high 17 saves and scored a goal at the end of the first period for the Spartans.

Jose Elias scored three goals for Santa Ana Valley (21-6, 3-2).

Canyon 17, Orange 4--Junior Chris Meyer had four goals and five steals and sophomore Dustin Lozano also had four goals and four assists for host Canyon (13-10, 2-3).

In the Serra League:

No. 5 Servite 25, Santa Margarita 1--Dane Jensen scored seven second-half goals and finished with a season-high 10 for Servite (18-4, 6-0).

In the Sunset League:

Edison 11, Fountain Valley 6--Senior Shaun Carman had four goals and six steals for Edison (14-11, 3-2), which finished in a three-way tie for second in league with Marina and Esperanza. Second and third place will be decided Friday in a playoff.

Marina 9, Esperanza 7--Dave Wagner scored four goals for Marina (13-10, 3-2).

In nonleague games:

Ocean View 14, Savanna 4--Senior Stewart Bounds scored nine goals for Ocean View (5-10).

Santa Ana 22, Kennedy 11--Scott Bradfield scored nine goals and Sal Aldaco had five goals and four assists for host Santa Ana (9-12).

In the Empire League boys’ cross-country finals:

Katella sweeps--Katella swept the top five spots and won their 10th consecutive league championship with 15 points. Daniel Mejia won the race in 15 minutes 43 seconds over the 3.05 mile course at Irvine Regional Park.

In the Orange League finals:

Valencia wins--Julio Saucedo finished second in 16:59 over the 3.1-mile course at Craig Park to help Valencia win the league title. Valencia, which was undefeated in league dual meets this season, finished with 36 points.

Joey McKellar won the individual race in 16:54 for Brea-Olinda, which placed second with 37 points.

In the Empire League girls’ cross-country finals:

Cypress, Icban win--Michelle Icban became the first girls’ individual winner since 1980 for Cypress. Icban finished the 3.05-mile course at Irvine Regional Park in 19:07. Cypress also won their first team championship since 1979 with 39 points.

Katella (62) placed second behind a second-place finish from Jonalyn Smith (19:30).

In the Orange League finals:

Brea-Olinda wins--Led by first-place finisher Jenny Thune (19:13), Brea Olinda took seven of the top ten spots, including the first six places to win with 15 points.

At the Sea View League girls’ golf finals:

Lee wins--Junior Stella Lee of Irvine shot a two-over 74 on the Coto de Caza South course to finish with a 36-hole total of one-over 145 to win the title. Woodbridge senior Channing Lovejoy shot 78 to finish second at 155 to earn the league’s second automatic qualifying berth for the Southern Section finals.

In the Orange League tennis finals:

Brea-Olinda wins doubles--Kelly Scanlan and Anne James defeated their teammates Meghan Hofer and Nancy Lee, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the doubles final. It was the third league championship for Scanlan, who won a doubles title in 1997 and the singles title last season. It was the second doubles title for James.

Christine Pham from Savanna defeated Uyen Dinh from Western, 6-4, 6-4, to win the singles title.
