7 Players Allegedly Misused Gas Card

Seven football players at Crescenta Valley High are facing one- and two-game suspensions for possible misuse of a credit card belonging to a teammate’s brother, according to reports.

Principal Gary Talbert said the school conducted a two-day investigation. Talbert declined to identify the players and said law enforcement is not involved.

The players reportedly ran up a $700 bill at gas stations.

Crescenta Valley (7-1, 3-0 in league play) leads the Pacific League and has regular-season games left against Pasadena on Friday night and Arcadia on Nov. 11.

The incident has overshadowed two players’ attempts at setting school records.

Quarterback Scott Vossmeyer is 188 yards short of the single-season record of 1,765 yards passing set in 1977 by Mike McCall. Receiver Steve Carballo is eight receptions behind the single-season record of 49, set in ’77 by Andy Abbott.

Bobby Stanley of San Fernando, who has rushed for 1,026 yards and 13 touchdowns, will probably not play Friday against Monroe because of a knee injury.

Stanley, a 6-1, 215-pound junior, rushed for 218 yards in 11 carries against Van Nuys last week. He would be replaced by William Lang, who is smaller and faster than Stanley.

Lang, a starting defensive back, has rushed for 285 yards in 42 carries. In a nonleague game against Los Angeles missed by Stanley, Lang rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns.

The one-game suspension of linebacker Jose Zapata of Van Nuys was overturned Tuesday by Lee Joseph, City Section director of officials. Zapata will play Friday night against Kennedy.

Zapata was ejected in Van Nuys’ 32-27 loss to San Fernando last week because he was assessed two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.

Van Nuys appealed and Joseph ruled the first penalty should not have been called.
