* Sylmar High was seeded No. 2 in the City Championship girls’ playoffs, which begin Monday.

The Spartans (12-1), Valley Mission League champion, will host to No. 15 Franklin (12-1) in the first round.

Somewhat surprisingly, Chatsworth, West Valley League champion, was seeded No. 4 and will host No. 13 Huntington Park (11-2).

The Chancellors (13-0) defeated Sylmar in four games, but were penalized for a poor showing at the Sylmar tournament.

“They beat us head-to-head,” said Coach Bob Thomson of Sylmar. “I thought they would have been seeded a spot ahead of us.”

Two-time defending champion Palisades (12-0) was seeded No. 1 and will play No. 16 Van Nuys (7-6).

Poly (12-1), Sunset Six League champion, was seeded No. 5 and will host Venice (9-3).

Taft (11-2) was seeded No. 8 and will host San Pedro (12-1).

Narbonne (11-2), which won the Sylmar tournament, was seeded No. 3 and will host No. 14 Monroe (10-3).

In the lower-level Invitational Championship, Granada Hills (8-5) was seeded No. 2 behind Marshall (10-3).

SOFTBALL

* Heather Bell of Calabasas has made a commitment to Southern Mississippi.

Bell, the Frontier League’s most valuable player last year, chose the Golden Eagles over Cal State Northridge. The outfielder-first baseman batted .342 for Calabasas last season and has played the past two summers with the Southern California Stealth 18-and-under Gold team.

Southern Mississippi advanced the Women’s College World Series last season in only its second year in Division I.

SOCCER

* The Cal Lutheran women’s team will play UC San Diego in an NCAA Division III West regional semifinal playoff match at 5 p.m. Saturday at UC San Diego.

The game is part of a doubleheader that will include the other regional semifinal between UC Santa Cruz and the Puget Sound at 2:30 p.m.

The winners will play at 1 p.m. Sunday in the championship match.

Cal Lutheran (15-6), unranked by the National Soccer Coaches’ Assn. of America, will be playing its final Division III final playoff game against the No. 5-ranked Tritons (15-1-1), who will move up to the Division II level next season after winning Division III championships in 1989 and from 1995 through 1997.

The Regals earned their first playoff victory in Coach Dan Kuntz’s seven-year tenure with a 2-1 decision over Chapman on Wednesday.

UC San Diego defeated Cal Lutheran , 3-0, on Oct. 10.

Cal Lutheran is 1-13 against UC San Diego, with five losses coming in playoff games. The Regals’ lone victory over the Tritons, a 2-0 decision on Oct. 9, 1992, was the last time UC San Diego lost a regular-season match to a Division III opponent.

“We are ready to beat them,” goalkeeper Kim Nelli of Cal Lutheran said. “We’re playing well and we are so up for this. We can’t wait.”

GOLF

* Chris Zambri of Camarillo shot a four-under par 68 on Thursday and moved into a tie for second place in the second stage of PGA Tour School at La Purisima Golf Course in Lompoc.

Zambri, who played on the Nike Tour this year, is at 77-69-68--214, two-under par.

Jeff Sanday of South Pasadena, who played at Cal State Northridge, is tied for eighth at 72-73-71--216 and Jason Gore of Valencia is tied for 15th at 70-76-71--217.

TENNIS

* Cindy Chu of Rancho Santa Fe defeated Samantha Hammond of Westlake Village, 6-3, 6-2, in the girls’ 16 division final last weekend in the Southern California Tennis Assn. K-Swiss Junior tournament in Santa Ana.

Diane Matias of Gardena beat Modesta Salmeron of Granada Hills, 6-1, 6-0, in the girls’ 18 final.
