Arroyo, Andrade Earn Matador Athletic Awards

Men’s soccer player Federico Arroyo and women’s swimmer Lisa Andrade were selected Cal State Northridge athletes of the month for October.

Arroyo, a senior forward, scored his 10th goal against New Mexico on Oct. 24 and his 11th against St. Mary’s on Oct. 29, giving him 103 points in his career. Arroyo is the fifth Northridge men’s player to record 100 points.

Softball--Pitcher Anna Russell of Harvard-Westlake has committed to the University of San Diego. Her college choice was reported incorrectly in Wednesday’s editions.

Andrade finished third in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:18.49 in the Southern California Invitational to set a Northridge women’s record. She is on Northridge’s all-time lists in the 100 breaststroke at 10:05.51 and the 200 individual medley in 2:12.18.

BASEBALL

* Rod Carew, a member of the baseball Hall of Fame, will be the featured speaker for Agoura High’s fourth annual First Pitch dinner dance at Agoura on Feb. 5.

* Dan Cey, former El Camino Real second baseman, is batting .281 in the Arizona Fall League. Adam Kennedy, former Cal State Northridge infielder, is batting .268 with four home runs.

MISCELLANY

* Valley College is unveiling a monument of George Ker and renaming its track after the former coach during halftime of the Monarchs’ game against Pierce on Saturday night.

Ker, 76 when died in April, coached at Valley from 1957-1989. He was track coach for 22 years and coached cross-country and football.

FOOTBALL

* Quarterbacks Chris Kobe of Canyons and Farhaad Azimi of Moorpark were selected offensive players of the week in the Western State Conference.

Linebacker Todd Hourigan of Canyons and defensive back Ray Carmel of Moorpark were defensive players of the week.

* Jeff Dunlap, who played at North Hollywood High, has been hired as an assistant to Jim Harrick at Georgia.

SOFTBALL

* Pitcher Anna Russell of Harvard-Westlake has committed to UC San Diego.
