Powell’s Four Touchdowns Pace Santa Ana to Victory

Elliott Powell scored four touchdowns to lead Santa Ana to a 34-20 Golden West League victory over host Westminster Thursday night, creating a three-way tie for second place.

A coin toss among Santa Ana, Westminster and Ocean View will be held this morning to determine the second- and third-place representatives in next week’s Southern Section playoffs.

Powell scored two quick touchdowns to give the Saints (6-4, 2-2 in league) a 14-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. He scored from 26 and 70 yards.

Powell scored on a 25-yard touchdown following a fumble recovery by Alfred Guidry to make the score 20-0.

Westminster (5-5, 2-2) bounced back with two time-consuming scoring drives in the third quarter. Hector Colunga scored on an eight-yard fourth-down pass from Kelly Coburn and Christian Chamberlain had a 21-yard scoring run on the second Lion drive, scoring with 28 seconds left in the third quarter.

Powell set up a Santa Ana touchdown in the third quarter with a 57-yard run. Albert Saldana then scored on a 20-yard pass from Lee Lopez.

Westminster moved within eight when Coburn hit Phillip Jenkins with a nine-yard scoring pass.

Powell quickly increased the lead to two touchdowns with an 80-yard kickoff return.
