Six From County to Play for Volleyball Titles

Five Orange County teams will play Saturday and one will play Friday in the Southern Section girls’ volleyball championship matches at Cypress College.

Saturday’s finale features top-seeded Newport Harbor, the two-time defending champion, against second-seeded Manhattan Beach Mira Costa in the Division I-AA final at 7:30 p.m. in Gym II.

Also in Gym II, top-seeded Mater Dei will play second-seeded Santa Barbara San Marcos in the Division I-A final at 4:30 p.m. and top-seeded Santa Margarita plays third-seeded South Torrance in the Division II-AA final at 1 p.m.

In Gym I Saturday, second-seeded Laguna Beach plays top-seeded Los Angeles Notre Dame Academy in the Division IV-AA final at 10:30 a.m. and second-seeded Calvary Chapel plays top-seeded Los Angeles Brentwood in the Division IV-A final at 6:30 p.m.

Friday, top-seeded St. Margaret’s plays second-seeded Palos Verdes Chadwick in the Division V-AA final at 7 p.m. in Gym I.

SOFTBALL

Colleen Bordages, a catcher at Santa Margarita, has signed to play softball next season at Baylor, according to her coach, Ken Delp.

VOLLEYBALL

Chrissy Davis, who helped Liberty Christian reach the Southern Section Division V-AA semifinals, has signed with Vanguard, Minutemen Coach Jim Gane said.

* Allan Comerford has resigned as girls’ and boys’ volleyball coach at Brea Olinda after two seasons.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Chavaughn Brown of Foothill has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Idaho, she said Tuesday. Brown, a 6-foot-1 post player, averaged 14.8 points and 11.0 rebounds last season.

* Katie Hardeman of Troy has signed to play basketball at Westmont, Warrior Coach Kevin Kiernan said. Hardeman, a 5-foot-11 guard, was an All-Freeway League selection last season.
