Colvin, Villa Park Run Up a 38-28 Victory over Santa Ana
Marquis Colvin rushed 25 times for 265 yards and five touchdowns Friday night to lead Villa Park to a 38-28 victory over Santa Ana in a Southern Section Division VI first-round playoff game at El Modena High.
Colvin had three second-half scores despite feeling woozy after a first-quarter hit. His 61-yard run with 9:17 left in the game put the game out of reach.
“He [Colvin] kept telling me [after the hit] that he didn’t feel good, but he’s a tough kid,” Villa Park Coach Pat Mahoney said. “He showed he can dish it out as well.”
Colvin’s numbers upstaged Saint running back Frostee Rucker, who carried 18 times for 102 yards and four touchdowns. Santa Ana, making its first playoff appearance since 1991, managed to stay close for most of the game, but couldn’t contain Colvin.
“Santa Ana looks like they are back,” Mahoney said. “They are solid and [Rucker] did a good job.”
The Spartans led, 17-14, at halftime, then took the second-half kickoff and drove 67 yards for a touchdown and a 24-14 lead with 7:57 left in the third quarter. Colvin did most of the damage and capped the drive with a 13-yard score.
Santa Ana answered with a 16-yard run by Rucker with 4:35 left in the third.
But back-to-back rushing touchdowns by Colvin, of 18 and 61 yards, put the game out of reach.
