A Double Take for OCC Cross-Country

Orange Coast won the men’s and women’s state cross-country titles on Saturday at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, becoming the first team to win both titles in the same year since 1989.

Mt. San Antonio was the last college to win both titles in the same year.

The Orange Coast women’s team earned its third straight title with 62 points, followed by El Camino with 93. Bernice Carbajal took third in 18 minutes 57.7 seconds and Heather Shurtleff finished the 3.1-mile race in 19:03.5 for fifth place to lead the Pirates, who had five runners finish in the top 30.

Santa Ana finished sixth in the women’s race with 189 points.

The Orange Coast men’s team won the title with 100 points, followed by Mt. San Antonio with 108 and Glendale with 109. San Diego Mesa took fourth with 111 points.

Santa Ana’s Jose Herrera won the individual title in 20:44.7 to break a course record by 20 seconds. Herrera is the first runner to complete the four-mile course in under 21 minutes. Santa Ana finished sixth with 197 points.

In the women’s water polo state championships:

Golden West 10, Diablo Valley 6--Sharon Vanderpas had four goals and Chelsea Rowlands had three to lead host Golden West (33-1-1).

Golden West, ranked No. 1 in the state, plays No. 2 Riverside in the final today at 3:45 p.m. at Diablo Valley.

In the men’s water polo state championships:

Citrus 12, Golden West 11 (OT)--Nenad Praporski scored seven goals, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Rustlers (32-1), ranked No. 2 in the state, from being upset by Citrus.

In the Southern California men’s soccer regional championship game:

Santa Ana 3, Pasadena 2--Tomas Serna, the leading scorer in the state, scored his 38th and 39th goals of the season for host Santa Ana (23-0).

Santa Ana advances to the state semifinals.

In the Southern California women’s soccer regional championship game:

Cypress 3, College of the Canyons 0--Jane Specht scored two goals to lift her season total to 28 as she led defending state champion and top-seeded Cypress (25-0) to the Southern California championship.
