THE TOP 10

Share

1) Mater Dei. Who else? We hear that if they had two varsity team, the Monarchs could claim the top two spots in the county poll.

2) Santa Margarita. A Mater Dei transfer. Five newcomers no one has heard of. Coach Jerry DeBusk has done well in situations like this before.

3) Brea Olinda. Best view on the hill and a team that will top the Orange League and more.

4) Los Alamitos. First-year Coach Richard Smith is joined by three returning starters.

5) Villa Park. Kevin Reynolds might be the best young coach in the county and with all that height, the Spartans should go sky high.

6) Esperanza. The great unproven. Is this the year that Coach John Cyrus convinces his players to play his system?

7) Servite. Share the ball. Hogan to Iti may be the best pipeline the Friars have had since . . . well, Iti to Hogan.

8) El Toro. Most likely rated too low, but the Chargers, who move to the South Coast League, have to prove they’re better based on history.

9) Ocean View. The weakened Golden West League will make this team difficult to judge.

10) Woodbridge. Coach John Halagan hates e-mail. Look for the Warriors to take an old fashion approach to the game.

On the bubble: Bolsa Grande (have to wait to see who suits up), Foothill (decent size, good shooters), Newport Harbor (Illingworth is a mountain), San Clemente (deep, athletic), Troy (should be the Freeway flier), Trabuco Hills (Martin will be “Ranier-ing” threes).
