Harris Propels Woodbridge Past Santa Ana

Shane Harris, filling in at quarterback for the second straight week, powered Woodbridge to a 20-0 victory over Santa Ana Thursday night at Irvine High School.

Harris, replacing Jimmy Pearson, who was out with a broken hand, rushed for 59 yards, threw two touchdown passes, kicked two extra points and made some big hits on defense for the fifth-ranked Warriors.

He also got some help from his friends. Will Barnes rushed for 101 yards in 12 carries. And Dave Delany caught a pass for one touchdown and ran for another.

Delany, who also saw time at quarterback, finished with 63 all-purpose yards and also had an interception.

“That is why we put him in those situations, because he is a player,” Woodbridge Coach Rick Gibson said of Delany. “He is very, very quick. We want to try and get him the ball in different ways, just like we do with Shane. He was great tonight.”

But the Warriors weren’t great early in Thursday’s game. They fumbled two times in the first quarter, halting drives.

The Warriors (4-0) finally got on the board 9:02 before halftime when Harris found Delany for a 21-yard touchdown.

Woodbridge extended its lead after Santa Ana was stopped trying a fake punt on its own 16-yard line.

The Warriors capitalized on the next play with Harris throwing a 16-yard touchdown to Rex Peterson with 2:41 left in the half for a 14-0 lead.

Santa Ana couldn’t get anything going on offense. Reynaldo Flores ended up with 109 yards on 15 carries and Alfred Guidry added 65 yards in 21 carries. But Santa Ana (2-2) had 14 plays for minus yardage, including six sacks.

Woodbridge capped its scoring when Delany scrambled for a 12-yard touchdown with 3:30 left in the third quarter.
