Malcom Leads Tustin Past Capistrano Valley

Branden Malcom scored three touchdowns to lead Tustin to a 58-27 nonleague victory over host Capistrano Valley Thursday night.

Malcom rushed for 152 yards in 13 carries, while quarterback David Miller completed three of six passes for 133 yards for the Tillers (2-3).

Junior Grant Melton scored four touchdowns and rushed for 83 yards in 15 carries for Capistrano Valley (1-3).

The game was delayed 30 minutes when Capistrano Valley’s Andrew Conners was injured on the final play of the first quarter. Conners broke both bones in his right ankle and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

The Tillers opened the scoring on a four-yard touchdown run by Mike Zill with 7 minutes 31 seconds left in the first quarter. Malcom then ran in for the two-point conversion, giving Tustin an 8-0 lead.

The touchdown was set up when Matt McCoy blocked a punt, giving the Tillers possession at the Capistrano Valley 11.

Capistrano Valley cut the lead to 8-6 on a four-yard touchdown run by Melton with 4:29 left in the first quarter.

Tustin then moved, 14-6, on a 14-yard touchdown run by Marshall Smith with 2:53 left in the first quarter. Malcom ran in for the two-point conversion to five the Tillers a 16-6 lead.

Tustin then moved ahead, 22-6, on a one-yard touchdown run by Miller with 8:17 left in the second quarter.
