Cypress Beats Dana Hills Behind Clark, Shorter

Cypress juniors Robert Clark and Darren Shorter led the Centurions to an 11-5 victory over host Dana Hills Friday night in a nonleague football game.

Shorter rushed for 43 yards in 16 carries and scored the game’s only touchdown.

Clark stopped two Dolphin drives with two interceptions.

Dana Hills (1-3) had four turnovers in the game.

The Dolphins’ offense was led by junior running back Kyle Kelly’s 24 carries for 102 yards. Dana Hills alternated between seniors Mike Bergey and Joseph Murray at quarterback.

Bergey, who started, was four for 10 for 78 yards and one interception. Murray finished eight for 13 for 65 yards and one interception.

“The guys played with a lot of heart tonight,” Cypress Coach Kerry Crabb said. “The defense was awesome. I’m proud of their effort.”

Dana Hills opened up the scoring on Taylor Kunzi’s 32-yard field goal with 4:03 left in the first quarter.

The Centurions (2-2) responded in the second quarter on Paul Kerr’s 37-yard field goal at 5:21.

Dana Hills’ Marcus Johnson tackled Shorter in the end zone for a safety late in the second quarter.

Shorter answered in the fourth by scoring on a 20-yard run, and ran in for the two-point conversion.

“Darren Shorter was amazing tonight,” Cypress quarterback Justin Rice said. “He proved he is the star of our team.”

Rice finished the game five of 16 for 85 yards with one interception.

Senior wide receiver Clarence Moore had three catches for 76 yards for Cypress.
