Nosing Out the Evil Weevils

Share

Regarding Belle Elving’s article on the “evil weevils” that can plague kitchen cupboards (Sept. 29), I bought a bag of cedar chips for hamster bedding at the local pet store and put some in a bowl in the cupboard. It worked. Moths left holding their noses. Just replace the chips with new, strong-smelling fresh ones whenever you no longer get that cedar smell. Probably mothballs would work too, but I’d much rather smell cedar than grandma’s attic when browsing for food.

I had a severe problem with those evil weevils and was driven to tears several times with my infested pantry. I threw out all the dry food numerous times, but they always returned. Finally, I read a very valuable tip in an artisan bread book: Put all dried products (flour, rice, pasta, spices, but not cereal) in the freezer for 72 hours after purchase. Right from the grocery bag to the freezer. This has made an enormous difference! No more bugs in my pantry, and no more tears!
