Irvine Beats Newport Harbor by 1 Stroke

Stella Lee shot par 29 to lead Irvine High to the team title at the Newport Harbor girls’ golf tournament Monday at Newport Beach Golf Course.

Newport Harbor was the first team to finish the round and its score of 100 held up until Irvine, the last team in the field, finished with a 99 after its last player, Nina Nam, shot 35.

Marina’s Courtney Goebel was the medalist with a 28. Lee and Stephanie Ott of San Clemente each finished with a 29, but Lee took second when she made a birdie on the first playoff hole after her tee shot hit the flag stick.

In the Orange League:

Valencia 108, Cerritos Gahr 131--Sisters Nikki and Katie Glowin shot five-over 34 and six-over 35 respectively, to lead host Valencia (12-0, 6-0) at Brea Municipal. Senior Nikki was co-medalist with Anita Plachan of Cerritos Gahr (1-8, 1-3).

In the Ocean League:

Ocean View 126, Santa Monica 128--Junior Nicole Peralta shot a six-over 40 to lead visiting Ocean View (7-5, 1-2) at Penmar golf course.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

Los Amigos 14, Santa Ana Valley 4--Sophomore Michele Nguyen swept 6-2, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host Los Amigos (10-3).

No. 2 Woodbridge 15, Redlands East Valley 3--Elizabeth Exon and Evie Soriano each swept to lead host Woodbridge (9-2). Exon won, 6-4, 6-2, 6-0, and Soriano won, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0.

In the Olympic League:

St. Margaret’s 18, Brethren Christian 0--Sophomore Brianna Ondryas swept 6-0, 6-0, 6-0, to lead host St. Margaret’s (8-3, 7-1).

At the North Orange County water polo tournament:

Huntington Beach 18, Magnolia 11--Brandon Berberet scored six goals to lead host Huntington Beach (5-10) in pool play. Sean Elo and Cory Worley each had four goals for the Oilers.

Troy 13, Cerritos Gahr 6--Ian Markstrum scored six goals and Andrew Couchman added three to lead visiting Troy (12-2).

In nonleague water polo:

Edison 14, Dana Hills 3--Shaun Carman had five goals, six steals and three assists for visiting Edison (8-7). Todd Ciborowski had three goals for the Chargers.

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Santa Monica Lighthouse Church 3, Capistrano Valley Christian 1--Sarah Wilde had 13 kills and Crystal Hickey had six for Capistrano Valley Christian (3-7), which lost, 16-14, 15-17, 15-7, 15-7. Lighthouse Church (12-0) is ranked sixth in Division V-A.
