Fire, Police Officials Honoring 6 Residents
Honorees for the 1999 Oxnard Police and Fire Public Safety Awards have been named by city police and fire officials.
“These are people who have made real contributions to health and public safety in the community,” Fire Marshal Haywood Merricks said.
Fire officials are honoring Phyllis Villarreal in her capacity as chairwoman of the Community Emergency Response Team Advisory Committee, which oversees disaster response training; and Bill McInerney and Mickey Short for involvement in the Fire Surf Rescue Program.
Police officials are honoring Harbor Commissioner Jesse Ramirez for his involvement with Oxnard schools and the annual Fiestas Patrias celebrations; Harriet Weigel, chairwoman of religious education for the Assn. of Retarded Citizens, for her involvement in various causes; and Florence LaManno, who has served on many advisory committees and task forces over the last two decades, for her work in the community.
The annual awards ball will be held Oct. 22 at the Mandalay Bay Beach Resort on Harbor Boulevard.
