Peacock Claims Rooftop Before Getting Collar

Georgia McGinnis of Arleta couldn’t help feeding the bright blue peacock that took up residence on the roof of her Vena Street guest home.

“I couldn’t let him go without food and water, as hot as it was,” the 73-year-old woman said. “I’m not that kind of person.”

Apparently, the bird enjoyed the diet of pet food, wild bird seed and lettuce, because it stayed there for a week, McGinnis said, until the dog next door began tearing up flower beds in a frenzy to get at the bird. After calling several animal shelters and even making a futile attempt to contact a peacock rescue group on the Internet, McGinnis called the Los Angeles Fire Department on Friday.

“We tried to capture the bird, but he just took off,” Fire Capt. Jon Cooper said. “He knew what was going on.”

The Fire Department summoned Department of Animal Regulation workers, who eventually caught the peacock on a nearby roof, McGinnis said. The bird will be taken to the Wildlife Waystation in Angeles National Forest.
