Gomez Leads Orange Coast Victory

Zoila Gomez finished first at the Cuesta cross-country race Friday, leading the Orange Coast College women to the team title.

Gomez’s time of 18 minutes 20.5 seconds over the 5,000-meter course was was 13 seconds faster than second-place finisher Kathy Lenno of Hartnell. Orange Coast’s Berencie Carbajal finished third in 19:03.6 and teammate Heather Shurheff was fifth in 19:15.5.

Orange Coast finished with 68 points. Mt. San Antonio College was second with d 75 points.

Orange Coast’s Juan Sanchez finished fifth overall in 21:23.5 on the four-mile course as the OCC men’s team finished fifth.

In Orange Empire Conference men’s soccer:

Irvine Valley 6, Fullerton 1--Japheth Long scored three goals for Irvine Valley (10-4-1, 4-2) at Fullerton.

Santa Ana 4, Golden West 0--Tomas Serna scored two goals, giving him a conference-leading 21 this season. Keith Buckley and Randy Zepeda also scored and Sasha Addeo for visiting Santa Ana (15-0, 6-0), ranked No. 1 in the state.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s soccer:

Irvine Valley 2, Fullerton 1--Jacqueline Van Ligen scored in the 10th minute for visiting Fullerton (4-11, 1-4-1), but Irvine Valley answered with goals from Shavon Melendezin the 17th minute and Stephanie Baldwin in the 50th minute.

Santa Ana 8, Golden West 0--Freshman Ana Velasquez, who has 26 goals and nine assists this season, led Santa Ana (11-2-4, 3-1-2) with three goals and three assists.

In Orange Empire Conference women’s volleyball:

Cypress 3, Saddleback 0--Heather Storey had 13 kills to lead Cypress (6-3, 3-1) to a 15-13, 15-6, 15-7 victory. Lauren Henderson had nine kills for Saddleback.

Golden West 3, Orange Coast 0--Julie Renfro had 13 kills as host Golden West won, 15-7, 15-1, 15-6. Golden West, the top-ranked team in the state, is 9-0, 4-0. OCC is 7-5, 2-2.

Irvine Valley 3, Fullerton 0--Lindsi Johnson led host Irvine Valley (8-1, 3-1) with 13 kills as the Lasers won, 15-5, 15-13, 15-4. Teammate Anjie Cirlly added seven kills in 14 attempts, and had five blocks and 12 digs. Camille Robles contributed nine digs and three blocks with her nine kills. Fullerton falls to 5-4, 0-4.
