Sunset Titles Go to Edison, Esperanza

Edison, ranked fourth in Orange County, edged sixth-ranked Esperanza, 36-46, to win the Sunset League boys’ cross-country championship Saturday at Central Park in Huntington Beach.

Esperanza’s Ryan Bousquet finished the three-mile course in 15 minutes 57 seconds to win his third consecutive individual league title, beating Edison’s Scott Brandos by 15 seconds. Edison’s Kevin McCarter was third in 16:32.

Los Alamitos finished third with 56 points.

In the Sunset League girls’ finals:

Esperanza wins--Lindsay Allen finished second on the three-mile course at Huntington Beach Central Park in 18:48 to lead the Aztecs to their third consecutive title.

Fountain Valley sophomore Julie Allen won in 18:10.

Esperanza won with 32 points, Los Alamitos was second with 66 and Marina third with 92.

In the Century League boys’ finals:

Santa Ana Valley wins--Juan Carrillo finished third in 15:29 over three miles at Yorba Regional Park for third-ranked Santa Ana Valley, which won with 34 points.

Villa Park’s Augie Escobar won in 15:08 to lead the Spartans to second place with 42 points.

In the Century League girls’ finals:

Foothill wins--Sophomore Laura Strachan won in 17:46 over three miles at Yorba Regional Park to lead Foothill, which won comfortably over El Modena, 20-63.

Strachan’s younger sister, Katie, a freshman, was second in 17:56.

At the Santa Barbara girls’ volleyball Tournament of Champions:

Newport Harbor wins--Tournament MVP April Ross had 27 kills for Newport Harbor (15-1), which defeated Mountain View St. Francis in the final, 8-15, 16-14, 11-15, 15-5, 15-12.

In the John Felix State boys’ water polo invitational at San Jose:

Newport Harbor 10, Foothill 9--Ryan Cook and Robert Weiner each scored three goals for the Sailors in the third-place game.

Villa Park 10, Clovis West 9 (sudden death)--Charlie Fisher scored the game-winner 43 seconds into sudden death for Villa Park in the consolation final.
