Michael Preis scored three goals in the first half to help Coach Terry Davila win in his Cal State Northridge soccer debut, 5-0, over Vanguard on Wednesday at Northridge.

Federico Arroyo scored in the 24th minute to make the score 4-0, and William Diaz scored in the 57th minute for the Matadors.

Arroyo finished with four assists and Diaz had three.

Northridge outshot Vanguard (0-2), 15-5.

BASEBALL

* Chris Cordeiro, a 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher from Thousand Oaks High, has committed to UCLA.

Cordeiro was The Times’ Ventura County pitcher of the year last season as a junior after posting a 7-1 record and a 2.32 earned-run average with 69 strikeouts and 16 walks in 75 innings.

Cordeiro chose the Bruins over Cal, Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara.

TRACK AND FIELD

* Mel Hein, coach at Taft High, had his condition upgraded to serious Wednesday after undergoing emergency brain surgery Monday night at West Hills Hospital and Medical Center.

Hein, 58, had an aneurysm at his Topanga home Monday morning.

Hein and assistant Neil Boggess guided Taft to its second consecutive girls’ title in the City Section track championships in May.

FOOTBALL

* Freshman Kyle Boller, former Hart quarterback, has been selected backup to Sam Clemons at California and could make his college debut Saturday in the Bears’ opener against Rutgers.

FYI

* The fourth Sparky Anderson golf tournament, a fund-raiser for the nonprofit organization Many Mansions, will be held Sept. 10 at Los Robles Golf Course in Thousand Oaks.

Anderson, who is recovering from heart bypass surgery, will start the Texas scramble tournament.

Proceeds will help Many Mansions support more than 1,000 limited-income residents in Ventura County with refurbished apartment properties and new construction.

Prizes include cars for holes-in-one and a big-screen television.

* Antelope Valley College will offer a two-night course in keeping football and volleyball statistics and athletic-event management through its community and continuing education program.

Classes are from 6-10 p.m. on Sept. 7 and 9. Cost is $25 per person, with a separate fee for the course book, “The NCAA Statistician’s Manual.”

* Dive Thousand Oaks, a U.S. Diving program for boys and girls 7-16, is holding registration.
