What do you do with two rambunctious youngsters who literally tear the place apart?
If you’re the Los Angeles Zoo, you build them a new one.
That’s what zoo officials did for Ashby and Quercus, two 3-year-old black bear cubs who moved into their new enclosure Thursday.
The cubs got sent to the doghouse four months ago for tearing up the newly laid sod in their first enclosure. While they frolicked in temporary quarters, the zoo bear-proofed their home by installing a bigger pool, a new waterfall and a jumbo-gym--a climbing structure of 12-foot-long Ponderosa logs provided for “behavioral enrichment,” said spokeswoman Judy Shay.
“It’s so they just don’t have to lie around and do nothing,” said Shay, adding that each cub weighs about 300 pounds. “They can play, look for things to do, splash water. They’re enjoying it already,”
Oh, and this time the grass is seeded.
