FRESHWATER

CASTAIC LAKE--Catfish are active in the backs of coves on the upper lake. Willie Mays, Lake View Terrace, 13 catfish to eight pounds, on mackerel and sardines. Eric Carter, Saugus, 12-1 largemouth bass on a black Power Worm.

PYRAMID LAKE--A morning striped bass surface bite is in progress, with fish averaging 2-4 pounds biting on plugs and other bass lures at the dam. Catfish are biting in the channel and marina.

JESS RANCH LAKES--Try rainbow Power Bait or inflated night crawlers for trout and mackerel for catfish.

CASITAS LAKE--Trout are providing the most action and limits of fish averaging two pounds are common. The fish are holding at about 50 feet at the dam.

CACHUMA LAKE--Fishing is slow, although you can still get a trout on Needlefish lures and Power Bait.

IRVINE LAKE--The catfish bite is very good and a 20-pounder tops the list. Mackerel is the bait of choice.

ANAHEIM LAKE--Lots of catfish being caught on mackerel and mealworm/marshmallow combos.

CORONA LAKE--See Anaheim Lake and use heavy line as there is lots of brush.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--The catfish bite has slowed, but mackerel is still producing some catches. A “bonus stocking” today should boost things. There is no take limit. Largemouth bass (catch-and-release only) are still active.

LAKE SKINNER--Catfish are providing the most action.

LAKE PERRIS--Top bass was 7-8 on a plastic worm. Otherwise, the fish have been small. Bluegill are active too.

BIG BEAR LAKE--A 6-pound trout was caught on Power Bait and two 5-pounders were taken on night crawlers.

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Trout fishermen are averaging about three fish a day, and some are putting hefty rainbows on their stringers.

LAKE JENNINGS--Catfish are biting and a few are topping 10 pounds, but there will be no more stocking as the lake prepares for trout season.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--Bass fishing is slow to fair at all lakes. An 11-pounder was caught on a Zara Spook at Murray, where the bite is slowest, and where the concession and boat ramp are closed until November because of low water during a construction project. Fishing season closes there Monday. Bluegill remain active at San Vicente and Lower Otay.

LAKE CUYAMACA--Tough fishing for most, but trout, catfish and crappie are on tap for those putting in the time.

EASTERN SIERRA--Heavy trout plants are in store for the holiday weekend, so it’ll be hard to go wrong anywhere except perhaps the lower Owens River (too fast and too warm during the day) and Pleasant Valley Reservoir.
