AROUND THE NFL : Jets’ Chrebet Breaks Foot

Wayne Chrebet, who didn’t miss a game in his first four seasons with the New York Jets, will be out for at least six weeks because of a broken left foot.

Chrebet was injured in the first quarter of Friday night’s 38-17 exhibition victory over the Minnesota Vikings. He wasn’t touched on the play, which came on the artificial turf at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.

Chrebet will need surgery, in which a screw will be put in the foot.

Miami released quarterback Craig Erickson and plans to put receiver Lamar Thomas, who has an injured left shoulder, on injured reserve. . . . Cincinnati signed punter Will Brice. The Bengals are trying to replace punter Brad Costello, who was waived this week. . . . Hall of Fame center Mike Webster was sentenced to five years’ probation after pleading no contest to illegally obtaining the prescription drug Ritalin. . . . The Cleveland Browns decided to replace the turf at their new $283-million stadium after player complaints following two preseason games.

Brian Griese completed 12 of 17 passes in his debut as Denver’s starting quarterback, but third-stringer Chris Miller was even better, throwing four touchdown passes to lead the Broncos to a 34-3 exhibition rout of the San Francisco 49ers at Denver.

San Francisco starter Steve Young did not play. Neither did Bubby Brister, now Denver’s No. 2 quarterback.

Oakland, playing its second game in five nights, got five field goals from Michael Husted and beat the Arizona Cardinals, 43-7, at Tempe.

At Baltimore, quarterback Stoney Case threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Stokley as time expired to lift the Ravens past the New York Giants, 28-24. Giant running back Gary Brown sprained a ligament in his left knee. No prognosis was given.

At Landover, Md., rookie Darnell McDonald caught a touchdown pass with seven seconds to play to lift Tampa Bay to a 16-13 victory over the Washington Redskins.

At Cincinnati, Chris Chandler jump-started an Atlanta offense in a 28-16 victory over the Bengals, who have been outscored in the exhibition season, 74-19.
