Gary Norman Paul, project manager in the Ventura County Recorder’s Office, died Sept. 3. He was 55.

He was born Nov. 21, 1943, in Los Angeles and grew up in Sherman Oaks. He was the student body president at Grant High School, graduating in 1961.

He went on to Occidental College in Los Angeles and graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in history in 1965.

After graduation, Paul attended the University of Denver and received a master’s degree in library science. He then went to San Jose where he worked at San Jose State University library as an administrative assistant.

He attended UC Berkeley and completed course work for a doctorate in library science. At that time, Paul was also in an Army Reserve unit.

For two years, he served as library director at Hilo College in Hawaii.

Paul met his future wife, Victoria, at Occidental College and again at a class reunion. She lived in Australia from 1969-73, and they were reacquainted while he was on a trip to New Zealand and Australia. They were married Dec. 22, 1973, in a chapel at Occidental College.

In 1974, the couple moved to Topeka, Kan. There he worked at Washburn University’s library.

From Kansas they moved to Cumberland, Md., where he worked at Frostburg State College’s library.

Paul moved to Ventura in June 1985, and his family joined him in December. He worked for the Government Center at Ventura in the recorder’s office until his retirement last month.

His interests included gardening, especially tulips, traveling and keeping up with current events. Paul enjoyed taking trips with his family, and they traveled together annually.

Paul was a member and past president of local chapters of both Toastmasters International and the American Records Management Assn.

In addition to his wife, Paul is survived by a son, Nathan of Ventura; a daughter, Lindsey Paul of Ventura; and his mother, Norma Paul of Saticoy.

In lieu of flowers for memorial services, contributions to a favorite charity or a bouquet of flowers may be given to a local library in Paul’s name.

Services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Saturday at the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Paula with the Rev. Chuck Laird officiating.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Bros. Stetler Mortuary in Santa Paula.
