Two number ones went down and another emerged on Friday night.

Paraclete High, top-ranked in the Southern Section Division XII, was routed, 38-11, by St. Bonaventure at Antelope Valley College.

The loss was the Spirits’ first against a Southern Section team since 1996, but even more painful was the possible loss of junior all-purpose back Michael Washington.

Washington, the division’s offensive co-player of the year as a sophomore, was taken from the field by ambulance late in the fourth quarter with a possible a head injury.

Washington wears No. 1 for Paraclete (1-1).

Even before the injury, Washington was overshadowed by No. 1 for St. Bonaventure, sophomore running back Lorenzo Booker.

Booker rushed 31 times for 145 yards and three touchdowns.

He scored on two one-yard runs and a nine-yard run.

The victory may be a good omen for St. Bonaventure, which thinks it may have its best team ever despite the transfer of standout quarterback Chris Lomabrdo to Newbury Park.

In the past three years, the winner of this game between longtime catholic school rivals has gone on to capture a Southern Section title.

The Seraphs won the Division XI title in 1996. Paraclete won Division XI in 1997 and XII last season and is vying to become the first team from the region to win three in a row since 1985.

That looked like a slam dunk after the Spirits defeated highly regarded Minneapolis De La Salle, 37-24, in Minnesota.

But with only three days of practice after the cross-country trip, Paraclete looked lethargic at times and was outgained, 333-171 yards.

Spirit quarterback Rob Fockaert completed only eight of 26 attempts for 95 yards and a 28-yard touchdown to Nick Haase in the fourth quarter.

Washington, who had 222 all-purpose yards last week, had only 84 on Friday.

Running back Curtis Brown was limited to 68 rushing yards in 13 carries.

Michael Spargo, who inherited Lomabrdo’s quarterback position looked solid in his debut, completing 11 of 17 passes for 146 yards, including a seven-yard touchdown pass to Adam Gray-Hayward.

Last year, St. Bonaventure squandered a 20-3 lead against Paraclete in a 27-26 loss.

The Seraphs led 19-4, at halftime Friday night, then got short touchdown runs from Booker and Spargo in third quarter to take a 32-4 lead into the final period.

Washington’s injury came at the end of a kickoff return midway through the fourth quarter, when he was knocked into the team bench.

He reportedly went in and out of consciousness and was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center for precautionary reasons.

Teammate Joe Martin, a sophomore wide receiver-defensive back, was also taken to the hospital with a possible broken arm.
