Hampton Fancher’s modesty and self-criticism in Steven Smith’s interview almost criminally understates his prodigious gifts (“Decades Later, It’s All Adding Up for Him,” Sept. 5).

As one of the producers of “The Mighty Quinn,” which he wrote, I recall his first draft screenplay as the best first draft I have ever read, and the working experience as the most enjoyable I have ever had with a writer. I wish there were more of him around.

Memo to any Calendar readers who would like to seek out Hampton Fancher’s acting debut in “Attack of the Brain Suckers”--that film does not exist. Nor does the producer referred to as “Bruno Visotto” (who allegedly discovered Fancher and put him in the movies).

The actual film is “The Brain Eaters” and its director was Bruno VeSota.
