University Wins Match in a Laugher

Share

The University High girls’ golf team walked away from the North Course at Coto de Caza laughing after its three-way match Thursday against Villa Park and Santa Margarita.

The Trojans laughed about their poor play, about their worst team score of the year and about shooting nearly 10 strokes higher than their season average.

The joke, however, was on Villa Park and Santa Margarita.

Despite what they considered a laughable showing, the top-ranked Trojans shot 133 to squeak out a one-shot victory over No. 4 Santa Margarita. No. 2 Villa Park finished third at 140 in what figures to be the best three-way match of the year.

Sophomore Angela Won shot 42 for the Trojans on the difficult par-36 layout--her first round in the 40s this season. Sunny Lee shot 43 and Michelle Barth shot 48.

Those are the numbers they don’t want you to see, according to their post-match pleading.

“Don’t put this in the paper, please,” said Won, who shed tears of frustration after posting her score until it became apparent the Trojans would win. “I don’t want anyone to see it.”

Santa Margarita, on the other hand, made a statement: It’s not just a boys’ golf school. Megan Mulhaupt had five consecutive pars before missing a two-foot par putt on the ninth hole and led the Eagles with a 41. Brenda Progar shot 42.

“I guess we underestimated Santa Margarita,” Lee said. “We’ve been beating teams by 17 strokes or something so I guess we expected that today.”

Villa Park, led by medalist Priscilla Park’s 38, hung in the match despite a 48 by No. 1 player Shelly Raworth.

“If we put it all together we’ll be right there,” Spartan Coach Gordon Sutorius said. “We lost by seven and our No. 1 player shot that many over her average.”
