South Torrance broke open a tight game with 21 fourth-quarter points in a nonleague game at South Torrance High.

South Torrance quarterback David Aupiu ran for 53 yards and three touchdowns and passed for another score to pace the Spartans, ranked fifth in the Southern Section Division X poll.

The game was scoreless until the second play of the second quarter, when Aupiu scored on a quarterback keeper to give the Spartans (2-0) a lead they would never lose.

The drive was set up after the Centurion Paul Kerr had a punt blocked by Chris Smith.

Down 21-9 in the third quarter, Cypress (0-2) recovered a fumble by John Martinez at its 35 yard line. The Centurions drove five plays, ending with quarterback Justin Rice completing an 18-yard touchdown pass to Clarence Moore to cut the Spartan lead to 21-16 with 11 minutes to play.

On the ensuing kickoff, Javier Arias returned the ball 92 yards for a touchdown and South Torrance (2-0) never looked back.

Rice completed 13 of 30 passes for 220 yards with one touchdown. Moore caught six passes for 151 yards.
