Cal Lutheran Is Half Good and Half Bad

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Cal Lutheran wasted an outstanding first half by allowing the University of San Diego to score 30 consecutive points in the second half for a 30-14 nonconference victory at Torero Stadium.

Penalties, turnovers, a blocked punt and running back Oscar Arzu of San Diego frustrated the Kingsmen (0-2) in the final 30 minutes.

Arzu, a junior tailback, gained 205 of his 210 yards in the second half. He scored on runs of 58, 27 and 49 yards.

“In my opinion [Arzu], is always that close to breaking loose,” Coach Kevin McGarty of San Diego (2-1) said of Arzu, a Belize native who never saw a football game until high school. “We didn’t do anything different in the second half. We were patient and didn’t panic.”

The other problems all were created mainly by the Cal Lutheran offense, which virtually shut down in the second half. The Kingsmen fumbled twice, losing one, and had three passes intercepted.

After taking just one five-yard penalty in the first half, the Kingsmen were guilty of eight infractions in the second half for 82 yards, many in critical situations.

Bryan Baxter of San Diego broke through the line and blocked the punt of Mark Kevern. Baxter failed to fall on the ball in the end zone, allowing Cal Lutheran to knock it out of bounds for a safety.

The Kingsmen dominated the first half, allowing the Toreros only 11 yards rushing while racking up 110 yards on the ground. George Keiaho netted 61 of those yards in 11 carries and finished the game with 89 yards in 17 carries.

Cal Lutheran opened the scoring on the second drive of the game. Keiaho capped the six-play, 51-yard march by sweeping in from the seven-yard line.

The Kingsmen pushed their advantage to 14-0 with 5:20 left in the half when Dorian Stitt powered in from a yard out to cap an 11-play 53-yard march.

Cal Lutheran got a break on the third play of the drive when a San Diego interception was nullified by a penalty.
