Crespi is 0-2 and struggling as its tries to rebuild using dozens of underclassmen.
But no one should doubt the skills of junior receiver Larry Viltz, who had 17 receptions for 176 yards against Quartz Hill, the second-best receiving performance in Crespi history. Mike Brady holds the school record with 19 catches against Salesian in 1974.
“He’s a big, physical receiver,” Coach Ron Gueringer said of Viltz. “Our offense is predicated on spreading the ball around, but he happened to be open. He’s our go-to guy. He’s improved on ways getting open and reading defenses.”
Viltz, 6 feet 2 and 202 pounds, has 22 catches for 222 yards in two games. He knows his 17-catch performance will make him a marked receiver.
“I was already thinking about that,” Viltz said. “My brother said, ‘People are going to be hunting for you now.’ ”
