VALLEY / VENTURA COUNTY SPORTS : HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK : It’s No Illusion, Unbeaten Agoura Is Early Surprise

After two weeks of play, only one Marmonte League team remains undefeated.
Westlake? No. Newbury Park? Try again.
Agoura stands alone.
The Chargers (1-0-1) haven’t had a demandingnonleague schedule likeother Marmonte teams (see Westlake-Clovis West and Newbury Park-Paso Robles), but they played above-average Camarillo last week and managed a 35-35 tie.
Despite relying primarily on juniors, Agoura is looking down on the rest of the league.
“That only matters if it’s November,” said Agoura Coach Charlie Wegher, who can take credit for the tie last week.
Departing from his usual play-it-straight philosophy, Wegher threw in a few curves, including three gadget plays.
Right guard David Rosenthal scored on a 69-yard fumblerooski, receiver Steven Tagai scored on an 82-yard double-pass play, and Justin Richter scored on a 78-yard swinging-gate play.
Wegher said he learned the intricacies of the swinging gate from UCLA receivers coach Ron Caragher, whom Wegher came to know while the Bruins were recruiting former Agoura quarterback Ryan McCann.
Regarding the trick plays, Wegher said: “Our kids pulled them off flawlessly.”
