Foothill Advances in Water Polo

Blake Seymour scored 41 seconds into sudden-death to give second-ranked Foothill a 7-6 victory over El Cajon Valhalla in the quarterfinals of the South Coast boys’ water polo tournament Friday at Corona del Mar.

Seymour scored on a breakaway after a pass from goalkeeper Adam Katz. Foothill’s Brett Reynolds scored the final goal of regulation during a man-advantage with 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter to tie the score, 6-6.

Seymour had three goals and three assists, Brian Alexander had two goals, Pat Logan had one, and Katz made 12 saves for Foothill (5-0), which plays Newport Harbor at 11 a.m. today in the semifinals at Newport Harbor.

In other quarterfinal games:

No. 1 Newport Harbor 7, No. 6 San Clemente 3--Peter Belden scored two goals and had a game-high four steals and three assists for Newport Harbor (5-0), which took a 5-0 lead at the half. Ryan Cook and Robert Weiner each scored two goals for the Sailors (5-0). Tim Birdsong had 10 saves. The Tritons are 3-2.

No. 3 El Toro 7, No. 5 Villa Park 3--Senior goalie Ali Khalessi’s 12 saves anchored a strong defensive effort for El Toro (8-1), which advanced to the semifinals. Tim Craycraft scored three goals and teammate Trevor McMunn had two goals. El Toro plays Long Beach Wilson at 9:50 at Newport Harbor.

Long Beach Wilson 10, No. 4 Servite 6--Albert Garcia had six goals for Long Beach Wilson (6-1). Dane Jensen scored two for Servite (4-1). Mark de Grasse made four saves for the Friars.

In the consolation games:

No. 7 Corona del Mar 8, University 3--Garrett Gentry and David Fabian each scored two goals and Brad Netherton had 12 saves for visiting Corona del Mar in a consolation game.

No. 8 Los Alamitos 11, Riverside Poly 3--Danny Coultrup and Trevor Wawrzynski each scored four goals to lead visiting Los Alamitos (7-1). Jeramiah Lidyoff had four steals for the Griffins.

In nonleague girls’ golf:

Valencia 122, Cypress 148--Medalist Nikki Glowin shot nine-over 38 at Brea Golf Course for Valencia (5-0). Cypress is 2-2.

In nonleague girls’ tennis:

No. 4 Dana Hills 13, No. 7 Laguna Beach 5--The No. 1 doubles team of Catie Reames and Lauren Calton swept, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2, to lead the host Dolphins (6-2).

Bolsa Grande 10, Westminster 8--Anhthu Ha and Cheryl Lacson won, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, in doubles to lead host Bolsa Grande (5-2).

In nonleague girls’ volleyball:

Trabuco Hills 3, Villa Park 0--Lisa Wood had 25 assists, Crystal Call had eight kills and Jessie Gore had three aces to lead the host Mustangs (4-1), who won, 15-5, 15-10, 15-6.
