We Even Get Letters About the Other Letters

Share

I love the letters to the editor; that’s where the real passion of the sports page is.

Jeffrey of Santa Monica defends Bob Knight by asking, “Why is it that any allegation that is made against Knight is automatically assumed to be correct?” History, Jeffrey, history. Why is it every time Steve Howe or Darryl Strawberry flunks a drug test it is automatically assumed they were using drugs, not that it was a faulty test? History. Knight has history, bad and good (you are supposed to have good, isn’t that what being human is all about?), but he has lots of bad history.

By the way, did you see the show about the kid who left Knight’s program for Arizona, then had a devastating car accident when a drunk driver ran into him and his girlfriend? He was badly hurt and his girlfriend was paralyzed. He talked about all the coaches and players around the country that called or sent him notes. Guess who didn’t bother: his former coach, Bob Knight.

Defend this guy if you must, Jeffrey, but when you do, you are building history.

Call me weird, but:

* I like all The Times sportswriters (even T.J. Simers).

* I don’t think The Times is biased for or against any team.

* I want more opinionated, controversial, and “negative” reporting.

In the March 25 Viewpoint, reader Bonnie Sawyer writes: “We’ve canceled The Times so many times because of the sports section, perhaps it’s time to do it again.”

I’d just like The Times editors to know that not only do I appreciate Tim Kawakami’s writing, but also that the sports section contains hysterical nuggets such as Ms. Sawyer’s letter.
