Lopez Goes for Sixth in a Row

Unbeaten Samuel Lopez of North Hills will fight Antonio Perez of Pasadena in an eight-round junior-bantamweight bout next Thursday at the Valencia Hyatt.

Lopez, a left-hander from Mexico who trains at the Golden Loy Boxing Club, is 5-0 with three knockouts. Perez (4-3) will be Lopez’s most experienced opponent.

“[Lopez] is starting to really climb up the ladder,” trainer Louie Loy said. “Perez will be a tough opponent. He likes to come forward and doesn’t back down”.

Two other Golden Loy fighters will be on the card. Welterweight Jorge Vega, who lost his debut, will take on Carson Gauthreaux (1-3) of Las Vegas, and welterweight Richard Gonzalez (3-5) will face Darrin Hughes (1-0) of Palm Springs.

Juan Ramirez of Santa Clarita will make his pro debut against Terry Evans of Los Angeles in the featherweight class.

A woman’s bantamweight bout will match Paula Fey of East Los Angeles against Lisa Valencia of Pomona.

BASKETBALL

* Jack Pollon, who guided Valley Torah to the Valley League championship in his only season as coach, has been fired.

Pollon said the school made the decision after Montclair Prep accused him of allowing an unauthorized team to use the school gym. Montclair Prep was the home gym for Valley Torah.

VOLLEYBALL

* The U.S. men’s national team will play Korea at 4 p.m. April 15 at Pepperdine’s Firestone Fieldhouse.

The squad features former Pepperdine All-Americans Kevin Barnett, Chip McCaw, George Roumain and Tom Sorensen, as well as Ryan Millar, a Highland graduate who was an All-American at Brigham Young.
