Bull Running Near Road Attacks, Is Killed by Officer
California Highway Patrol Officer Riley Dixon was caught literally on the horns of a dilemma Saturday, and ended up with minor injuries and a dead steer for his trouble.
The dilemma was how to corral a bull that wandered onto Hueneme Road in a rural area south of Camarillo. Dixon and six other officers responded after several motorists reported seeing a bull running near Las Posas Road at 7 a.m.
The posse surrounded the bovine and tried to get it off the road, but the animal got testy, chasing a resident who had stopped to help and then ramming a patrol car.
Concerned about public safety, Dixon shot the bull once with his department-issued .44-caliber semiautomatic pistol, authorities said.
Instead of dropping, the bull charged Dixon and knocked him down. During the attack, one of the bull’s horns lightly pierced Dixon’s skin.
The officer fired four more shots, and the bull finally dropped. The animal’s owner couldn’t be located, so a county road crew was sent out to retrieve the remains.
