Plan OKd to Restore ‘Great Wall’ Mural
The Los Angeles City Council on Wednesday called for a plan to be developed to restore and preserve the 25-year-old “Great Wall of Los Angeles” mural in Van Nuys.
Councilman Alex Padilla said the half-mile-long mural in a flood control channel is the world’s longest and is a cultural treasure for Los Angeles.
The mural, Padilla said, “captures and depicts the significant historical moments in our city’s rich history.”
The work of muralist Judith Baca and many volunteers has begun to fade because of weather and age, and supporters say it may cost $500,000 to restore and improve.
The council approved a motion by Padilla asking the city Cultural Affairs Department to identify funding to restore the mural.
