Sterling an Easy Target, but He’s Not the Only One

Share

No doubt none of you caught the irony of Bill Plaschke including ostensibly clever quotes from Bill Dwyre in his attack on Donald Sterling [“Cellars Market,” April 12]. All signs indicate Sterling is a terrible owner, while Dwyre himself has presided over the deterioration of The Times’ once-fine sports section into a daily overdose of smart-alecky potshots, with quality reportage hard to find.

Memo to Plaschke: Donald Sterling has not suited up for a single Clipper game this year, and hasn’t coached for one minute, nor is he expected to. As Plaschke notes, there are “three top young players, including two top-five draft choices” on the club. Yet Plaschke blames the Clips’ poor performance entirely on Sterling. The Clippers’ problems run deep. Those top players and the coaches have collectively performed abysmally this season. Blaming it all on Sterling, no matter how easy a target he is, smacks of simple-mindedness and lazy sportswriting.

Gee, I sure hope the Clippers won’t suffer from the Sports Illustrated cover jinx.
