Wabash Avenue residents clapped and cheered at the City Council’s unanimous decision Tuesday to approve two road closures on their street to eliminate cut-through traffic.

Council members said they supported the Traffic Department’s recommendation to put in the permanent closures--one at the corner of Prospect and Wabash avenues and the other on 6th Street between Chestnut and Wabash avenues. The city had conducted a study of the area last year, and the Traffic Commission recommended two temporary closures, which the council later approved. Traffic Engineer Bernie Dennis said the permanent closures are the best solution to the speeding and cut-through traffic residents have experienced for more than six years.
