Rio Mesa Raises Its Singles Bar
Quinn Borchard, Davey Jones and Kevin Jiang dropped only six games in winning all nine singles sets for Rio Mesa High in a 12-6 victory over Camarillo in a Pacific View League boys’ tennis match Friday at Camarillo.
Borchard (26-0) won his sets at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, and Jones (23-1) beat three opponents by 6-0 scores for the Spartans (12-1, 5-0).
The Scorpions (9-4, 3-2 in league play) tied Rio Mesa, 9-9, in the teams’ first meeting of the season, with the Spartans winning on games, 72-66.
Chris Worthington and Thi Nguyen won three sets at No. 1 doubles for Rio Mesa. Worthington is a combined 35-1 in singles and doubles this season.
COLLEGE BASEBALL
Glendale 14, Fullerton 5--Jason Botts and Ryan Stonerock each had two doubles and three runs batted in for the Vaqueros (16-21) in a Fullerton tournament victory.
Justin Togeas added a double and three RBIs for Glendale.
Fullerton is 17-20.
Pepperdine 8, Santa Clara 5--Dane Sardinha hit a home run and drove in four runs for the Waves in a West Coast Conference victory at Pepperdine.
Daniel Haren (6-4) struck out eight for Pepperdine (25-18, 13-5) in eight innings.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Cal Lutheran 9-5, Redlands 1-0--Mandi Comer hit a two-run double in the first game of a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep at Cal Lutheran (14-25, 11-7).
WOMEN’S SWIMMING
Valley 65, Rio Hondo 32--Daniela Yanez won both diving events for the Monarchs (3-5) in a Western State Conference victory at Valley.
