Irvine’s rail planners will probably drop the San Diego Freeway median as a possible route for the proposed transit system through the city.

City officials said their discussions with Caltrans revealed that routing down the median would pose too many problems.

The freeway alignment was one proposed route for the Irvine segment of CenterLine, a countywide transit system under consideration.

Dropping the median option would leave two other options: the so-called Edison right-of-way, which runs just north of the freeway, and the San Diego Creek Channel spur through Woodbridge.

Members of the Irvine Transportation Authority did not vote on the issue at their Wednesday meeting because only six of the authority’s 15 members were present.

Mayor Christina L. Shea and Councilmen Larry Agran and Dave Christensen agreed that the creek channel option probably would be their choice.
